Thinking twice about plastic should be the new black

Day 2 trying to be plastic-free was once again a failure.

I forgot my ‘keep cup’ for my Saturday morning take-away coffee so opted for a sit-down coffee at the local deli instead. I ordered eggs on toast, too.

Simple enough. My plastic-free morning appeared to be on track – except for the serve of margarine which came in a tiny plastic tub!

Things did not improve much when I tried to do my shopping at the strip of shops next to the deli. The majority of fruit, vegetables and bread was plastic encased – although staff at both shops were happy to pack my goods into boxes and paper bags when I asked.

My plastic insanity pic of the day goes to the people who were promoting a new brand of ice-cream at the shopping strip – the plastic spoons and tubs dwarfing the contents of each container. What happened to wooden spoons?

All day long I kept noticing plastic everywhere. Abandoned half-bottles of water at the local swimming pool, plastic straws added to drinks, bits of plastic on the grass from whipper-snippers, people walking about with plastic shopping bags.

Normal stuff. Except a world with more plastic bags than fish in the sea just isn’t normal.
